This past winter, I served as Editor-in-Chief of The SUNY Meus–the daily newspaper of the SUNY Model EU.
It was an amazing and unforgettable experience. SUNYMEU 2008 took place in Izmir, Turkey–a beautiful and exciting city on the coast of the Aegean Sea.
The trip provided an introduction to the culture of an American ally in a volatile region of the world. I would argue that Turkey is a European nation, but regardless, the country borders Iraq and Iran.
During the simulation, I was the lone editor managing a staff of four reporters. I was awake, working, until the wee hours of the morning each night of SUNYMEU. I had to deal with short staffing, time contstraints, unfamiliar technology and a lack of publishing software among other things.
It was a high pressure situation for my newsteam and me, but we pulled it off.
SUNYMEU 2009 was a totally different story. Again, it was a great experience, but this time, it was stateside–in New Paltz, NY.
While we continued the print version of the newspaper, we moved some content online to thesunymeus.blogspot.com. There, you will find video, pdf versions of our publication and more.
